Jordan Vineyard & Winery
Founded in 1972, Jordan Vineyard & Winery is organized in the manner of a traditional French chateau. Located in an appellation renowned for producing world-class wines, Sonoma County’s Alexander Valley, the winery stands on an oak-covered knoll overlooking 275 acres of meticulously tended vineyard. Situated less than twenty miles from the Pacific Ocean, the topography, soil and subsoil of this splendid site, interacting with the climate, give Jordan grapes their distinctive personality. At Jordan, old-world expertise and new-world technology are combined to produce Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay wines that display consistent style and elegance.
Winemaker
Rob Davis
Jordan Winemaker Rob Davis arrived in the Alexander Valley in 1976 to oversee production of the winery's first vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon - an elegant, Bordeaux-style wine. By 1979, Rob was also producing a complex Chardonnay similar to the white wines of Meursault.
After twenty- nine harvests, Rob's tremendous technical background and appreciation for the old-world traditions of winemaking remain a guiding force at Jordan Winery.
Rob took his position at Jordan Winery immediately upon graduating from the University of California at Davis. "I like to say I went to two schools to learn about winemaking," Rob explains, "the school at Davis and the school of Andre Tchelistcheff." From the former, Rob acquired a degree in Fermentation Science and the modern skills and technical knowledge essential to making superior wines. He began his studies at Davis as a pre-med student, but soon discovered that his roommate was having a good deal more fun than he studying enology. His strong foundation in biochemistry facilitated a prompt change of major, and Rob found himself serving on the Cabernet Tasting Board and involved with several other research projects.
At Jordan, Rob initially received weekly visits from consulting enologist, Andre Tchelistcheff whose winemaking career in California transcended over half a century. While traveling together in France, Andre and Rob studied the country's viticultural practices and winemaking techniques, many of which have since influenced grape cultivation, crush, fermentation, maceration and aging of wines at Jordan Winery. The two winemakers found that they shared a common understanding and philosophy of winemaking, and a European appreciation for wine in daily, gracious living. Andre retired from consulting in 1992, leaving the well-trained and experienced Rob Davis to continue solo.
Born and raised in Sacramento, Rob remains active in cooperative research with the University at Davis. Professionally and privately he is a master craftsman with perfectionist ideals. Whether working with wood, competing in triathlons, or making wine in the cellars of Jordan Winery, his aspiration is to enhance with reverence the medium provided him by nature. At Jordan, these are grapes cultivated and hand-picked in Sonoma County’s finest vineyards.
